June 6, 1944 – The Remarkable Normandy Landings That Opened the Road to Victory

On June 6, 1944, Allied forces launched the largest amphibious landing operation in military history, known as D-Day or the Normandy landings. This operation is considered the beginning of the liberation of Western Europe from Nazi Germany’s occupation during World War II.

More than 155,000 troops from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied countries crossed the English Channel and landed on the beaches of Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword on the Normandy coast of France. Supported by thousands of ships and aircraft, this operation was one of the most complex military operations ever undertaken.

The success of D-Day established a crucial Western Front against Germany. Allied forces suffered heavy losses, particularly at Omaha Beach, but nevertheless managed to advance towards Paris. Less than a year later, Nazi Germany surrendered, and the war in Europe ended.
